I arranged a return and Microsoft were happy to replace it but before I did a friend came over that has a surface so I tried it on his and it worked fine. They are currently working on an update. At the first glance, it could all seem like a problem caused by incompatible drivers, but it turns out that installing the latest version of the drivers does not make any difference. If someone knows how to get to the repair please please help. I tried a number of other things in Ease of Access. I was told that the hardware in my keyboard was broken so it would need repairing 10-14days. But this will be a bit hard if you cannot use the keyboard to even edit, so maybe what i suggest doing will work.
Dell will not help, 3 month old pc and they say its software so Microsoft's problem. The touchscreen works in those instances where keyboard and mouse do not. My Machine is Windows 8. I know I am posting quite late, but I thought I might explain how this happened to you. After reinstalling, update Windows to bring it current. Finally, I got a swap and had a keyboard problem within 2 days.
Today, the I key, enter and mouse are all that seem to work. I tried out new keyboards at a best buy, nothing worked. Immediately afterwards I found this and it saved my weekend! She had giving up on Windows 8 and lost all her confidence to use the new computer because she could no longer type on the keyboard. This also happens to my keyboard. The lights remain on, so the devices are connected, though The original keyboard and mousepad continue to work just fine. Pressing a key long enough will give one keystroke and that gave it away. If you were booting to a Recovery Console you may not have the same device problem with it. That's what I've been having to do. Everything I've found points to the error 19 being related to hardware, all of the topics I've read are related to the optical drive. On another occasion removed Account Manager permissions for half of Windows. Thus all the steps above. A pc can be used all day long without a mouse.
Also as a user of localized Windows, I would appreciate a screenshot. Logged in to windows, and the same problem comes up again. Prior to using the dvd to get a cmd promt, I noticed in my many futile attempts to force recovery mode while booting using shift-F8 that the keyboard worked fine until the very second Windows started loading and then it stopped. Windows is using the generic keyboard and mouse drivers. Or maybe you fell asleep on your keyboard? I've installed Windows 8 from scratch. Having the same issue here. Long story short I did a format and reinstall and its now working again on 8.
My touch cover stopped working on Sunday after working perfectly Saturday evening. The create password in the Users setting menu. The keyboard and mouse work fine for a while, then fail at boot time. It may also be related to sleep mode. Thanks very much for posting this fix.

The keyboard lights up for a couple of seconds on start up and then stops. I sat down and logged in as usual, however, once at my Windows 8. The location of the option should be the same even if language differs. Mouse and Keyboard work fine when booting from dvd. When you plug into the mouse or keyboard ,can you see it show in Device Manager? I think it is defiantly weird. Update: I tried restoring to 3 of the previous restore points and it complains that it cannot restore as some thing is corrupted.
