If their expressions or mannerisms suggested either man wasn't completely invested in the project, even for a split second, the entire film would start to unravel. It crept up my spine like the first rising vibes of an acid frenzy. Who are these people, these faces? They nominally cover news stories, including a convention on drug abuse, but also sink deeper into a frightening psychedelic otherworld. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. That being said, there are a number of problems that simply can't be ignored. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas can be exhausting at times.
He is also the reporter, the main character of the film, and he is in such a daze that after the motorcycle race is over, he's not even sure who has won. Apparently his performance was so convincing that he had a hard time getting work after this film because everyone was convinced that he was wasted on the set. It is a more or less true story. Those who make it through the first twenty minutes of the film are more likely to stick with the director to the end; those who balk at Duke's bat-stricken fear and shake their heads at the insatiable man-beasts that suddenly cloud his view should go ahead and eject the disc before their patience is undone. He is in a permanent daze throughout the entire film, constantly consuming drugs every time the camera pans onto him. What is even more intriguing is Gilliam's use of his camera, cinematography and backgrounds -- the camera essentially takes on the role of a third person, as it is constantly moving, positioned at awkward angles against harsh, dizzying backdrops, wallpapers and carpets. Gonzo drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race.
The movie is based on the semi-autobiographical memoirs of Dr. It is an experience unlike any other, and although I can completely understand the negative reviews it received upon its release years ago, I find myself somewhere in between the haters and the die-hard cult fans. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. What was I doing here? I couldn't possibly recommend this film more highly. With little to show for it? Personally, i regard 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' as one of my absolute favorites, definitely in my top 10, and possibly even top 3. We were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. And that, I think, was the handle. While the late author's 1972 novel and the Brazil director's subsequent 1998 film have divided audiences over the years, alienating some and engrossing others, both have successfully carved out a notch in pop culture infamy; both have been denounced by sneering detractors who claim Thompson's twisting narrative and Gilliam's unapologetic aggressiveness are aimless and off-putting; and both have been hailed by countless critics who find the words and imagery of Thompson and Gilliam's brazen bastard to be as maddeningly memorable as they are intoxicating. Terry Gilliam the Director is an accomplished film maker who began his career as one of the members of Monty Python. Whether you adore Gilliam's brass tacks or despise his bleary antics from beginning to end, it's impossible to deny that Depp and Del Toro completely inhabit Duke and Gonzo. It is a wonderful view on the warped nature of American 'Culture' from a completely askew angle. God save us that we actually have to think a little when we sit in those awful theatre seats.
This is an excellent movie, a true adaptation of the book, nothing more and nothing less. A consummate marriage of manic source and surreal adaptation, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is unequivocally Hunter S. Mutiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous. Fear and Loathing apologists will quickly shrug off the worst of it, but audiophiles will have to grit their teeth and focus on everything the mix does have to offer.
In some ways the movie is as confused and wandering as its narrator. The actors straddle fine line after fine line -- their debate about what to do with a young girl nearly renders the bumbling duo unlikable -- but they manage to keep the pair's appeal teetering on their shoulders. Along the way, he encounters a terrified hitchhiker Tobey Maguire , a chummy photographer Craig Bierko , a grizzled colleague Mark Harmon , a gullible young painter Christina Ricci , a high-strung police officer Gary Busey , a flirtatious reporter Cameron Diaz , a mouthy carnie Penn Jillette , a waitress Ellen Barkin , a fanatical speaker Michael Jeter , and a slew of other eccentric cameo roles Gilliam assigned to familiar Hollywood faces.
