Heavy Duty BMW oil filter cap Removal/Install Tool
Be careful not to damage oil filter cap. The manual for the E39 is a two volume set, so when buying make sure you are getting both. I found quite strangely that the oil housing rocked a bit when I reinstalled it. Most of the access doors are missing from vehicles I work on. There is no free lunch. I should of been wiser and figure it out at the start. I was excited about all of it so I was spending extra time to ensure everything was done properly and not any other way.

Your leaking oil filter housing gasket has been bothering you for months. The hardest part of this job was getting the alternator off and back on. It is important to understand that a straight 30 weight oil acts exactly the same at engine temperatures as does a 5W30, or 10W30, or 15W30 motor oil. Then get your 36mm socket out and begin to remove the oil filter cap. The old gasket was hard and brittle leading to the leak. Loosen the Oil filler cap on top of the valve cover so that the oil will drain smoother.

October 19, 2014 Followup from the Pelican Staff: Good catch. Install the new O-Ring and Replace the oil filter. It's also a good idea to have the codes read they will do this free for you at Autozone and probably other auto parts stores and if a fault code has been stored you can address any issues now before any surprises show up down the line. I have used and in the past. I was ready after having investigated the issues and solutions so this time I got the new gasket and this time, I decided to exclude any possibility for a bad product and had ordered it from the dealer, so I would not doubt the quality of it as I was desperate and paranoid at that point from having unexplained leaks. I did check the flatness of the housing and it is warped a bit about. Wait till oil drains from the filter housing and then replace the filter and cap and hand tighten.

We had a '00 528i. Replace bolt and hand tighten clockwise.

This kit is for all N52 engines. Clean off drain bolt and replace the crushable copper washer new washer is included in your filter kit. Concerned, I took off the housing to make sure the gasket was still properly seated and it was. It appears to still be leaking. Hint: Prominently mark the 6. At this point your pretty much stuck anyway.

I do see that the topsider has the same flimsy clamp as does the Motive. Very carefully crack open all the screws. I am still seeing a leak, but also noticed that it has trouble idling in cold starts, but once the engine warms up, it runs fine. This will be a very, very small leak. Remove the large O-Ring on the cap which is located at the top to seal it. Everything on any car may break or leak someday. Allow engine oil to drain until it stops dripping.
